serving the liberation of Mother India from the yoke of the British Raj, before He gave Himself entirely to His Yoga of the Earth. Just a year earlier, the Government had designated and appointed a new person to act as Secretary, giving her directives as to the orientation of her mission on site and providing her with a very considerable budget. In the course of the fifty and some years of its physical existence, the collective situation has kept changing; relatively few individuals have been able to maintain and develop their aspiration and consecration and, from a decade to another, many have come, many have left, have returned, many have remained, have died, many were born; many have joined the adventure without having the privilege to experience directly Sweet Mother‟s presence and the guidance of Her consciousness-force; many, issued from the local population, have asked to become “Aurovilians” without always clearly comprehending the deeper meaning of this commitment; all together, these many movements have somewhat altered, inevitably so, the quality of the common, shared experience. All sorts of lapses may have taken place. The power of a real, actual unity has not yet fully manifested. Numerous ill-wills, arising from jealousy, envy or narrowness of mind, were thus enabled to feed their rancours by spreading noxious rumours, which in turn generated indignation and condemn or distrust of the Aurovilians, in spite of the growing appreciation of their achievements, and this has given one of the main pretexts to legitimize the Central Government‟s authoritative interven tion, through its Secretary: “It was high time to bring some order in the affairs of Auroville!”. The representatives of the Government, in order to conduct their action on the ground, have had to rely on opinions, judgments, partisan information and a relative and conditioned idea of the truth of Auroville; they did not have the capacity, let alone the desire, to see all its aspects or to integrate its already concretized approaches; thus they have had to destroy and condemn, rather than to include and harmonize. Seizing upon the internal quarrel of views that had fed a quasi permanent conflict within the community as regards the materialization of the city according to directions and plans left by R.A., the architect initially chosen by Sweet Mother to help manifest Auroville, the Central Government decided to demonstrate its realizing capacity by imposing and financing the construction of roads and infrastructure at the scale of a city of 50 thousands inhabitants, without any compromise or adjustment with the reality on the ground and following exactly whatever indications were common to these plans and models, whatever may be the consequences.
