as one, and its management could be legally handed over to the actual residents of Auroville. Members of the SAS as well as any individuals who have lent their names in the purchase of land for Auroville would have no legal say in the management of this land unless they are accepted as residents of Auroville, and then their say would be equal to any other resident‟s. This is, roughly, what I feel could and should be formulated now – and that is for the temporal issue. The permanent issue is clearly enough stated in the Charter of Auroville. Such an agreement would leave open the channels of creative cooperation with the Government such as the Institute, Educational Research, Village Action, Ecology, etc; depending on our ability for discipline, it might even fortify them. This is a contribution. Please consider the substance, not the name. (These points, if found useful and acceptable, must obviously be developed in some detail, and rather carefully I suppose!) Now of course the situation we are in has arisen from an almost opposite stance, as there seems to have been a decision made in the high places to actually “take over” the whole “project” as a model city of tomorrow and correct its course as a collective of international repute dedicated to the ideal of human unity as predicated by Sri Aurobindo. That this is being enacted upon without much regard or appreciation for the past five decades of work and commitment by many thousands of committed individuals or any intention of actually integrating what has been already achieved shows that the positions have considerably hardened and the „ misunderstanding ‟ much worsened. However there have been over the years many periods of uncertainty and hostility and Auroville – as we all should know and remember – belongs „to the Supreme‟ and in this fact lay our only safety and security! But for the anecdotic value, I feel it apt to share this “memory”, one of many I have found in my old diary notes, some as far back as the late 70s, defining very similar predicaments and conflicts and opinionated strife as are currently observable!
