On Auroville 2022 to 2025

- -15:19-04-2024: “Who owns Auroville? - Who owns the land of Auroville?

It is now time, drawing our lessons from the experience of the past decades, to reaffirm our commitment to the purpose and raison d‟être of Auroville and to clarify and state the conditions that must be observed by all participants to the task set by the founders of Auroville, the Mother and Sri Aurobindo. The Government of India, the actual inhabitants of Auroville and all its well-wishers, contributors and collaborators must, wholeheartedly and unreservedly, give Auroville a clearer base of action and progress and formulate its essential principles so as to guard it from any future possibility of misuse, misdirection or misrule, having learnt from past contradictions. To begin with, the role of the Government of India must be restored as one of legal protection and providence, guardianship of the ideal and warranty of the experiment on the world scene. Th e land offered to Auroville must be kept and belonging to the Divine alone and no exchange or sales must ever be considered cared for as; if there is a need for more land for the development of Auroville, one must rely on the goodwill and aspiration of well-wishers as a sign of greater and deeper understanding and of attunement to the action of the Consciousness guiding Auroville; all land parcels, wherever they are located, that have been offered to the Divine for the work of Auroville, must be tended and made to serve the truth to be realized upon earth.

Every individual joining Auroville in whatever capacity must vow never to lie.

The first line of the Charter of Auroville reads: “Auroville belongs to nobody in particular. Auroville belongs to humanity as a whole. But to sojourn in Auroville, one must be a willing servitor of the Divine Consciousness.” In Auroville as in all things related to Auroville, the sense of ownership is replaced by one of caring stewardship: all structures, all goods and assets and all equipments are to be cared for as material expressions of the One Consciousness.

According to the Mother, the land of Auroville belongs to the Supreme .
