quotes, in the treacherous field of our denunciations and opportunistic ostracisms, in our self-serving declarations of bankruptcy (for in our wisdom we have already many a time condemned Auroville to defeat or insignificance). This pretence of the ego in us would thus be the single cause of all our compromises and treasons.

„We want a race without ego‟

Such is the central law of our path; there is none other.

Each of us is an apprentice and will only become capable of service once all ego is abolished within one‟s nature: „ego‟, this bad fold, this bad habit, which was indispensable to the development of human consciousness, has served. Another being awaits us.

Now I shall relate a few episodes which seem to me to reflect the currents and forces at play in our collective experience, such as I have lived them personally. The first one occurs at the time of this „conflict‟ with the SAS (the Society which was de facto the owner of the lands of Auroville and responsible for the entire „project‟ for which its legal representatives were receiving donations in Mother‟s name). A number of individuals had found themselves unwilling or unable to join one side or the other and, by affinity or pragmatism, had assembled under the banner of neutrality: they were thus nicknamed „the Neutrals‟. It so happened that most of them had individually turned to a great Tantric master well-known and appreciated of Mother, settled in Rameshwaram, known as „Panditji‟. Mother had several times sent him one or another of Her disciples so that he helps them to discipline their inferior nature and control their mental activity. She Herself had temporarily made use of his practices as a help to assist Her own work of awakening in the most material consciousness. Panditji had thus actively and diligently worked for the resolution of certain obstacles; however, Mother also knew that he would as yet be unable to follow Her further ahead, despite the veneration and utmost respect he felt for Her and She even advised Satprem, who had assiduously followed his discipline during several years, to disengage from his influence. When Satprem could begin to publish the 13 volumes of the Mother‟s Agenda, transcribed from those recordings he had been able to preserve since the 50s, the situation of the Aurovilians was rather precarious and their unity of consciousness and commitment was all the more crucial and it seemed to him that the affiliation of these „neutrals‟ to Panditji could prove to be noxious in the co llective atmosphere; thus he addressed to them all, in writing, a sort of warning. There took place a large gathering of „Pour Tous‟, as we used to call our assembly, which would take place here or there as per the possibilities; that time it took place in one of the „permanent‟ houses of „Certitude‟.
