This is Republic Day.

… Around 11 am, as we are both at work in the garden, a crew contracted by the Highways and TNEB to clear and hack away any growth on the path of the new high-tension line enter the compound carrying their tools – double hand saws and ropes and axes… They are under orders and no one in any position to decide is with them; therefore we can only ask them gently not to cut more than is absolutely necessary. But in a few moments, the large Shiva Belwam tree is down, and large limbs of the flamboyant king “Realization” and a whole “Imagination” tree are severed and toppled and, as they fall, plumerias trees are also crushed, and there is nothing for us but to watch... Parthy politely suggests a few adjustments so less damage is done and he stands guard near the well and pump-house to make sure it is not damaged. … Parthy goes to dispose of a bag of waste (bits of broken hose mostly) and gets Rs. 30/- for it which he offers to Sri Ganesh…! He also offered fruit: he had a dream last night where Sri Ganesh had moved to the front room of the shrine to eat fruit and had asked for more…! … By noon, the western part of the garden is a disaster area; only half of the “Realization” tree at the North-West corner of the compound has survived; other trees are mauled and amputated… Sri Ganesh seems to be unperturbed, though – as if to say “well, we’ll simply have to be creative and work with Nature to rebuild a haven for a little beauty and sweetness in this world…!”
