On Auroville 2022 to 2025

Another source of confusion must be addressed openly and courageously: it is the interpretation given to the figure of 50,000 inhabitants for the city of the future. It is evident, for any conscientious researcher, accessing all available documents and recordings, that Sweet Mother did not wish to have an affluence of people whose motivations would not be congruent with the collective ideal; thus, how can one possibly reach unerringly this amount of volunteer residents? Insofar as a clear understanding is reached with the Central Government as to the respective responsibilities and commitments, it becomes possible to conceive that a number of individuals, interested by Sri Aurobindo‟s teaching and Auroville‟s aims, may respond to an opportunity to participate in the future of the country as members of a community of researchers, without necessarily be ready to give themselves to a more demanding Yoga, or to a more intensive collective adventure, but simply to contribute their expertise and service, while being assured of their necessities. Of course one would first have to agree on such structures of reception, habitat and service areas that would themselves be valid examples or models for the future. Moreover, it is imperative for the future of mankind and the earth, that the example of Auroville, whose lands belong to “nobody in particular but to humanity as a whole”, not only be maintained and respected, but may serve as encouragement for the universalization of this fundamental principle, by which all earthly resources must be offered to the Truth and return to their supreme Owner, for its progressive incarnation. It is therefore indispensable to correct the abuse and mismanagement that have occurred regarding Auroville‟s lan ds during the last two decades under the cover of directives issued by the Foundation to consolidate at the earliest the needed territory of the city through exchange, if necessary, of lands located outside the city circle that may be considered as less important, and to return to the earlier status, forbidding any transaction other than offerings. Sweet Mother has forewarned us: “one must always be larger than one‟s experience”. This applies not only to the individual on the path, but to the group, to the collectivity in its progress. We must integrate the experience into a larger, more inclusive state, such is the lesson we must learn, which compels us to grow. This advance alone will reveal the evolutive significance of what we may have lived as an upheaval. ***
