On Auroville 2022 to 2025

The very effort of creating Auroville would invisibly contribute to the advent of peace in the world, countering the destructive movements and threats of conflicts opposing a more luminous and truer future for the Earth. Auroville would offer itself as the site of an actual resolution of the difficulties of India and of the world at large, which would eventually be represented. And Auroville would will itself to be cradle and the welcoming ground for the embodiment of an entirely new species, wholly moved by the consciousness of Unity which must replace the mental consciousness in the terrestrial evolution, as Sri Aurobindo has announced it. Sweet Mother gave numerous public messages during the first few years of Auroville, which was formally founded on February 28, 1968, so as to further clarify the aims and the deeper laws guiding this collective adventure and the conditions for participating in it. Who, then, was going to govern or guide, organize, coordinate the life and progress of Auroville, which by that time only counted a few hundreds of inhabitants? Who would be capable of managing the lands and assets of Auroville in the right spirit? Who would be able to discern the best decisions to be taken in terms of admission, projects, enterprises, modes of action and collective living? Who would have the necessary qualities, as She had defined them, of impartiality, equality, clear-sightedness, benevolence towards all, so as to approach all the questions and challenges that would present themselves day by day? Those who were then responsible for the Society were unprepared for this organizing task relating to people who had come from other cultures and social backgrounds to join an entirely unprecedented adventure on the soil of India. And the mission of Auroville overpassed the admitted norms of all spiritual quests of the past, reaching beyond all the dualities and the habitual oppositions between science and inner experience, intellect and intuition, morals and the force of Truth, traditions and the progress of consciousness. They did not know or understand how to bear themselves and act according to the need, and positioned themselves instead as the proprietors – of all funds and assets as well as of the “project” itself, and endeavoured to obtain the assent and allegiance of the first inhabitants, reducing the entire attempt to a conditioned participation in a moral and physical venture devoid of any deeper reach or significance. In 1973, however, She withdrew from all activity and, in November, left Her body, at the age of 95.
