On Auroville 2022 to 2025

Large monasteries have indeed existed, assembling sometimes several thousand members, some lasting for centuries - such as in Tibet, for instance, until China seized it; but these were dependent on a very rigorous allegiance, just as in the Christian abbeys, made of strict and severe discipline and distanciation from the “profane” world, while Auroville would give itself the task of offering up all the activities of human life to the transforming force of the Truth-Consciousness. For the creation of Auroville, lands had to be bought, as many and as contiguous as possible, so as to acquire enough vital space for a collectivity which would eventually count some 50 thousand inhabitants, with its farms, orchards and forests interlinked needed for a harmonious environment. Sweet Mother gave this figure of 50 thousands as a dimensional key to the progress of the experiment and the scale of its venture in correspondence with the entire world, a venture conceived as a laboratory of live research in all domains of human consciousness. She had already founded a Society which had as its main objectives the needed donations for the purchase of lands and buildings for the use of the Ashram, and the formation of centres for the study of Sri Aurobindo‟s teachings throughout India. To this Society She gave the task of acquiring the land for Auroville. However, in India, there are legal ceilings limiting the amount of immovable assets (land mostly) which a given Society can acquire and own, and it is likely that this ceiling would have, in the case of Auroville, been reached fairly rapidly. Sweet Mother wanted no interference whatsoever from any outside organization - be it the Government of India or any international agency – and accepted money only when it was given without any condition or loaned at reasonable rates, without any possibility of ulterior claims on the affairs of Auroville. She declared that Auroville would belong to no one in particular, but to humanity as a whole, and only those who would be willing servitors of the divine consciousness – consciousness of unity, of truth and harmony - could ever sojourn in it. In Auroville one would prepare the emergence of a “race without ego”. So long as Sweet Mother was the President and the legal Owner of all these assets, Auroville would be enabled to grow without too much of opposition, since She would give it Her moral guarantee – in the name of Sri Aurobindo, generally respected in the entire country: “Auro - Ville”, the city, or town, of Sri Aurobindo. Nevertheless one would need to be cautious and care not to break any law of the land and this would be a continuous challenge, demanding a constant attention and integrity beyond reproach on everyone‟s part.
