Another Choice
Where the animal will have perhaps left only the twigs and strands of a hive, parts of a torn carcass, a tunnel dug out or bits of a nest that winter gales have scattered, it is a formidable and unaccountable load that we laboriously collect and drop in our lifetime.
The products the animal leaves behind are all organic and liable to be recuperated by other activities of terrestrial Matter.
For ages, those of human life remained assimilable: sooner or later Nature would absorb them.
Today we quarrel about the historical significance of a pottery fragment unearthed by a mechanical shovel and boast that we can thus prove the nobility and rank of our lineage and, even while we formulate our arguments in an electronic mail, we stand responsible for an unprecedented material disaster.
Or complicit.

Children of the universe, we are well proud of our achievements.
And even while the misdeeds of our obscure egoism seem about to form the tidal mass wave that will annihilate us, we still prefer to try and extort from Matter such other secrets as will ensure the perpetuation of our enjoyment. Children of the universe, some amongst us yet sometimes do remember and their numbers increase: they recall a very ancient choice, a very ancient dream, a very ancient oath, a very ancient commitment – to serve the True, the Right and the Vast in its infinite unfolding, in its manifestation of harmony ever new, ever unique and ever vibrant with puissant creative joy.

We say, “let us love one another”, we say, “let us practice equality of opportunities for all” and we say, “let us live in peace with our neighbors”, but how could this ever be likely to occur in this or another world, as long as we do not become truly conscious of our choices and of their source, as long as we, each of us, do not unite with That which alone can choose in truth?
