Yesterday afternoon Babu replaced the submersible pump in the well; but we are agreed that we will wait for the protective device to be fitted before we switch it on. Babu has brought me the first bills for this latest repair job; I phoned Arun to ask him to try and get these new expenditures covered from the compensation funds… Madhu, Kusum’s eldest son, has come again to visit – he came the other day but didn’t see me and didn’t stay. This time he sits before Sri Ganesh and then does this weird thing that his brother Vipul did earlier this year: he phones on his mobile, I don’t know to whom, and talks very loudly in Gujarati, a sort of violent invocation and outpouring; and then he steps into the inner shrine and touches Sri Ganesh’s figure, disturbing the flowers, then moves out and walks in the garden… He has offered, beside of box of 6 laddus, Rs. 60/-
