… Yesterday evening and this morning, Selvam phoned the reports on Parthy: the doctors are trying to cope with and treat a strange eruption of abscesses over his body, some internal, some closer to the skin, now that the organs are out of danger; they do not seem to quite understand this phenomenon and the reports Selvam tries to give are often confusing. But a picture is forming in my mind, as the spots of infection seem to correspond to earlier wounds or injuries and, particularly, on his back, to the points of entry of the hooks that were attached to him on festival days at his village temple to a local Shakti, with which he had to pull a loaded tractor and trailer up the street, nine years running…! This takes me nearer to the root of the unease; from the early stages, I had sensed a connection to these local deities and the practices around them, as Parthy has been used by them and his family and relatives as their representative for many years and he has had a number of dreams of this particular deity being jealous and claiming him…
