… The history of Sri Ganesh’s successive transformations and changes of status is punctuated with religious texts and scriptures, telling tales of events taking place between the realms of gods and human beings, so as to substantiate and legitimize his growing importance and prominence. For instance, it was in answer to the uncontrolled ambition of a certain human king who ignored Indra, the chief of the gods and even sought to dethrone him, that Vighna was called in to impede the king’s progress. Seeing this the ascetics on earth implored Brahma – or Shiva, depending on the accounts – to send help so as to counter Vighna, the very Spirit of the Obstacle and, in response to their appeal, Ganesh was sent upon earth and conquered Vighna. And thereafter Vighna, who had previously been Ganesh’s own role and function, now became Ganesh’s personal attendant, having now surrendered to him and become devoted to him alone. From then on, the “arrangement” was that whenever Ganesh was not first worshipped and propitiated and invoked, Vighna would be let loose, so to say, to block and impede and arrest. And this new step came about as a consensual decision or choice: from the gods, from the “enlightened” humans and from Ganesh himself…!
