… As every Monday I return here in the afternoon for the tending of the garden. Last Saturday afternoon Manikandan had phoned me and we had a long talk and it seemed he was genuine in his understanding and his effort to correct himself and we had agreed we would meet this afternoon, do the work together and spend more time talking. But he does not come at all. He has not informed me either as to whether the “chanting group” is continuing and, in his absence, I do not wish to be hostage to their long sessions and I lock myself in the compound before 6 pm so as not to be disturbed while I finish the watering. There seems to be some sort of unreality around this relationship, like a layer or a wrap, which is invaded with the most ludicrous formations…
