Likewise, in the chivalrous culture of the knight, to make allegiance, the swearing of it, is an act the import of which is irreducible and transcends both life and death. (According to this inner self-conduct, the mere notion that one might in any way justify, for instance, the decision to change one’s guru or even to seek a second one, seems an aberration.)
