Another Choice

And in fact we have but one solution if we are to attempt and establish in this life itself a lucid, substantial, increasing openness to the reality of Consciousness – one solution which will not amount to cowardice or evasion or quitting the field: and that is the way of service.

Whatever may be the role and function imparted to us at this time of this existence, we must simply invoke, call and practice the spirit of service.

We must learn to convert our instincts, inherited or transmitted, of competition, self promotion and personal advancement by the energy of offering and the discipline of clarity and rightness in our actions and disinterested, dedicated and conscientious care in all of our life. Electrician or director, parliamentarian or astronomer, medical doctor, factory worker, driver or baker or athlete, the conversion is perforce gradual and progressive, but it is bearing a great change for it puts us in direct relation with consciousness and dissolves the veils that separate us from our own truth.

It liberates us from the pressures and the false challenges of ignorance, it illumines and cleanses our view of the world – and of the forces that act in it.

And this truth in work and action, this truth which we discover alive through service, is revolutionary – without violence.

It undoes, without a struggle, formidable constraining and alienating constructions – a smile and a depth are revealed.

We are little by little released from the self-image that had held us like hooked bait, released from the conformity that used to reduce all future to a representation utterly senseless in the end.
