Mechtild came to wish me and to offer to Sri Ganesh, for me, some fruit from her garden and incense from the Ashram and a varnished seed pod, and left… … Once again the headman attends, alone, the Aarti – happily! … It is like for Aurovilians, especially of Western origin, these “rituals” mean nothing at all – and rightly so, I suppose, in the perspective of our yoga, although I do not think I could ever have dismissed them so easily, even long ago… It makes me think again of how little I care for “public opinion” or “peer pressure” (an independence I have certainly gained the hard way) and that I am probably quite unique in this respect… and therefore, in the context of present Auroville, uniquely fit to do this service…! This said however, I am also inclined now and then to give up the whole exercise as an illusion or self-delusion…; or to wonder whether my efforts and commitment to the promise made by You, Mother, are of any consequence… And then the physical mind can only be baffled: why should such a big deity be at all aware of this tiny, puny attempt at contact?!... Murthy came to do his pranams and offered Rs. 100/- And at the same time a lorry arrived at the gate to unload sand for the work – while two loads of stones had already been delivered early morning…; and so, in this funny way, I could perhaps see the “coincidence”, that materials have at last come for Sri Ganesh’s work on my birthday… And then the elder came late and offered Rs. 10/-. And Arjun called ahead for me to wait and arrived a little past noon to do his full pranams and to offer Rs. 1,000/-…!
