But today I had my fill of the crass, gross callousness that rules…: when I went back outside the gate to sweep there as usual, I found an entire family standing by their large car right in front of the public tap, eating; as I went on sweeping they finished their meals and proceeded to throw their dirty cardboard plates onto the grass; I took the father to task, remonstrating strongly and showing him the waste bin, and he actually agreed, quite meekly, to go and collect the plates… Then they all good-naturedly trooped, along with their driver, into the compound, and did their pranams and explored the garden and took snaps of one another… What to do? The whole country is in that state: over a billion people turned addicts and consumers, totally mindless of their earth mother… … Yesterday I had to run some errands in Pondy, and the condition of my legs was the worse ever: it felt like crying, and also like giving up, or accepting what the message, in those moments, appears to be – “this is the end of that way, this stretch is over…”
