with Sri Ganesh

… Last Sunday and Monday, for two nights and days, a special puja was held in the ancient grove near to, and north-west of, Matrimandir and Sincerity, where the old shrine to Kali is located; from my couch in the house, through a kind of half-sleep – partly due to an acute nerve- pain in the left leg – I kept listening to the beautiful recitation and chanting of slokas and mantras, many of which I could tell were dedicated to Lord Ganesh. At first no one could tell me why there was such a ceremony; the recitation in Sanskrit was very good, on a single loud speaker, with clear diction and obvious feeling; it was only yesterday that Parthy finally went to enquire and found that a new, small shrine had just been erected and dedicated to Lord Ganapathy, right next to the Kali temple and that it had been funded by one of the young leaders in Kottakarai village. This location is right within the area of the “City” and, somehow, it made me happy that Sri Ganesh’s presence was further being established within the Auroville body. And in the same period of time, another, tinier shrine to Lord Ganesha was also completed and formally dedicated, also within the Master Plan of the city, down past the Nursery, where the old canyon used to run into Bharatipuram; it seems a man from a nearby village has managed to acquire a small plot of peramboke land right there and intends to settle a mechanics and repairs shop for motor-cycles and he has wanted thus to seek Lord Ganesh’s protection for his new venture; I drive by this place every morning on my way here…!
