… A big cyclone – with a new name, “Ayla”! - has moved up the coast yesterday, taking all the moisture away, and struck Bangladesh and West Bengal… … Just as I am about to enter the shrine and begin preparing for the puja, the big hefty politician arrives with his driver; the power has gone off and the temple is quite dark inside; he hands me over a piece of camphor – to offer his “sins” to Lord Ganesha – and I burn it silently, slowly circling Sri Ganesh’s figure and it takes quite a while and it is a test of the man’s steadiness (unintended on my part!); and, at the very instant when the flame goes off, the power comes on; the man is so pleased that he claps his hands like a child…! He offers, as usual, Rs. 50/-
