Questions and Meditations

30 How to communicate?

This effort here, this attempt at communicating, is it worth it? Is it not rather vain and absurd? I write these words in the French or English language with a style and an approach to meaning and coherence which are probably peculiar to me and which may as much repel as encourage the eventual readers. I have neither a name as an author nor any status, do not publicly exist and this text is only accessible on my web-site which is practically unknown. I have neither the means nor the needed vitality to carry it into a more public space or forum. And even if I were a successful author with an already favorable audience, likely to pay attention to what I wish to transmit, it would still amount but to a tiny proportion of humanity being touched. Consequently, all the reasons to give up on it weigh heavily enough for me to abstain and seek and discern another, more direct method: does such a method exist? Nevertheless a certain insistence in crediting a diffuse sense of urgency comes in support of this particular movement to communicate: who knows, perhaps someone somewhere will read a sentence that will trigger an act, a series of useful acts? We each of us, are born in circumstances and milieus which can still be so alien that they might as well be located on different planets or in other space-times. But this link – still dependent and subject to perversions – which the new technologies provide us all with, this connectivity, brings at once in each other’s presence such realities as can still be felt or experienced as incompatible. To be born in a hamlet of the Ivory Coast, a derelict suburb of Minneapolis, an ancestral mansion in Shangai, a popular district of Kiev, a farm in Karnataka – which understanding, which vision of the world can we all really share? *
