For a number of days, the BSNL – Government owned telephone company – has brought an excavator with its single driver to dig out a deep trench all along the road to Edayachavadi; the work is done with no regard whatsoever for fences or living trees, and once the cable is laid, the soil is just roughly shoveled back over and, with the rains, it creates the ugliest mess, not to mention treacherous relief on the roadside for all the road users. As Manikandan sleeps in the Riddhi room these days, and is there in the evenings and early mornings when the excavator driver stops and starts his work, I have asked him to inform him that we would rather have the trench dug by our own people in front of the temple compound; and what happened is that, Saturday evening, just when the excavator was reaching the temple wall, it broke down, and the operator could not fix it and had to leave…
