the general process of evolution and transition, She would take every movement, every attempt, every enterprise – and every problem – as a representative incidence and an occasion to work in the world. Thus would this first caravan carry more than its occupants – traversed with fears, hopes, doubts, resolves, haunting images and expectations and on the whole rather disoriented – and represent a certain Western generational contact with the new Force as well as, from the perspective of the French past, a certain thrust towards the realization of a historic promise (“liberty, equality, fraternity” for all).

How to receive and welcome them, what to explain to them, how to orient them, and what markers and reference points to give them? These were no erudite, nor were they disciples of course; most of them knew nothing of Her and Him, but the concept of this city of the future exerted on them a mute and puissant attraction.

The greatest misunderstanding, from the very first hour, the misunderstanding that dissipates only with a real change of state, arises from the fundamental difference between the movement and action of the Consciousness and the movement and action of the Mind. The Mind projects itself forward in a linear fashion and constantly strives to correct and adjust the trajectory so as to realize its project as it has formulated it; its capacity of adaptation is limited and it is as wary of the unexpected and unforeseen as it is of whatever is too different and it surrounds itself with protective laws, rules and conditions.
