friendship which would in turn open other doors – and the possibility of better grasping the stakes of the adventure and of joining it for good. And there were those in the villages who refused to so easily put their faith in these foreigners and opposed their influence, or else sought for ways to draw some profit without falling under their sway. Or else there were those, quieter and more interested, who wished to derive from their creative presence some practical and material benefits for their community and import into their own collective life those methods and knowledge that could contribute to a general improvement. And within the families was gradually forged the evaluation of the way of life and standing of those who had become members of this large enterprise = had they not acquired a status, were they not respected, did they not already have responsibilities, did they not dispose of more assets and superior facilities? And so, pressures began to be exerted on those who had long settled in and to gradually alter the motivations of all concerned. Little by little, insensibly, a sort of opportunism entered the collective dynamics, placing emphasis on the rights of every member rather than on self-giving, on the exterior, visible and measurable part rather than on a conscious and transformative unity.
