Or else it could be young men who, through their team work with the pioneers, had become attached to this life so different and so open and, as a result of mere fact and daily action rather than of any reasoned decision , had actually adapted and developed – uniquely so. But none of them was forgotten by their kin = their behavior was watched and observed and commented on, studied and assessed from year to year – in what measure was their existence improved, what was the influence of these foreign morals, would they ever be truly integrated, or would they eventually be rejected, would they forget their own people, and what would they be able to do for them?

And as time went by and, in spite of all perceptible hazards, threats of defeat and dispersion and the rigors of the material conditions, the actual existence in their midst of this adventure became confirmed – the construction and elaboration of a whole city, of an entire world, there, right next to them and before their eyes and perhaps with them too -, the villagers developed attitudes that could diverge, according to their natures and characters. There were those, men and women, who every day joined a construction site, a workshop, a handicrafts unit or a household and among whom some were proceeding towards integration – to be accepted as full-time member of the community. These workers, these assistants, were offering an alert adaptability, a receptivity in their apprenticeship of new skills, a plasticity of response to circumstances, a smile and a readiness that more educated individuals, with their more defined and rigid expectations, can no longer contribute; thus were formed relationships of trusting collaboration, mutual esteem and
