However one could not ignore the environing economic poverty and refuse to those villagers who asked for it, the opportunity to ameliorate their daily existence; but, women as men, their level of education was so rudimentary that they could only be employed precisely for those tasks that are generally reserved for servants, domestic helps or subordinates. Was not one, by the sheer force of habit and circumstance, going to reproduce the perpetual rifts? Moreover, in thus delegating a great part of the material and practical tasks, the field of research was diminishing and the possibilities of attaining a truly superior and more integral collective consciousness would be that much reduced. One must therefore strive to ally to this mutually profitable social arrangement a self-demand for authenticity and fraternity and, as far as possible, to set and provide access to a practical education allowing these “employees” to acquire some freedom of choice and orientation. In India, the family is a complex entity with numerous ramifications which, as a general rule, tends to determine each person’s choices and conduct; an ordinary family may count dozens of members who, despite all sorts of quarrels, huffs and vexations, remain mutually supportive. Amongst the first villagers who had joined the adventure, few had deliberately chosen to do so : teenagers who, boarding in the school, had experienced growing together in a vibrant atmosphere with kids hailing from far away and learnt and absorbed a little of the world’ immensity, had then asked to stay on, to engage themselves, to try and find a place and function of their own; or it was an abandoned mother, rejected by her husband and her caste who, having known another quality of relationships in the work space, found shelter and a reason to bloom and regain her *
