Which town?

One would here and there place rocks and boulders – there were still, to the West and inland, vast granite formations from which one could extract and transport whole singular rocks – and various grasses, orchids and plants, nearer to the water, would complete the scenery.

The ego was in no hurry to abdicate : we would quarrel about the position of a hillock, the leading of a team, the quality of a work, for a matter of discipline, assiduousness or regularity. Freedom now appeared to be a more arduous and exacting conquest than it had first seemed: it was not enough to escape from a constraining mould of rules, criteria, judgments and customs, one then had to give all of oneself, all of one’s sincerity – a sincerity that must constantly progress. In order to conquer this freedom, one had to have heroism, an integrity of every moment and every act, and effectively and actually offer every thought, every emotion and every movement. And, in fact, the freedom to live Her city, to be worthy of it, to serve its aims and its ideal, could be apprehended concretely only by a conscious effort of the entire being = a yoga.
