of their comfortable urbanity, while we, day and night and come what may, were there, living and working. Moreover, the aspirants and volunteers could not indefinitely occupy temporary camps of bamboo, palm leaf and thatch: the need to initiate, to create, invent, develop, harmonize and establish places and spaces of offered beauty, of living material progress, this need was growing in everyone. And there were the thieves and vandals and those who were bribed to do mischief = what was elaborated in the day had to be protected at night. Affinities too were at work, personal situations evolved and tasks multiplied – and necessities: the time had come to build, here and there, to give forms. For several years already, houses were being built on the outer edge of what was termed the residential zone: the first among them had been designed and constructed by PC., initially with R.’s consent before he had drifted away. This was for PC. and his partner, both trained architects, an opportunity to concretize their concept of living spaces and forms – to introduce their own style. Other residences were being created in other sites, spontaneous expressions of relationships to the environment, built by “amateurs” who had learnt directly on the ground and wished to give shape to their dreams. Other candidates to architectural expression soon arrived as well, attracted precisely by the innovative character of this vast project of revolutionary urbanism, who hoped to find eventually an occasion to contribute their own approaches. *
