So, What’s the Solution? All live, organic foods have digestive enzymes. If it is organic, it will also have digestive microbes. While dairy foods are not great, yogurt and kefir, a fermented, enzyme-rich milk drink, are good sources of beneficial bacteria. Yogurt, kefir, and, for that matter, all dairy products are much more effective when they are organic. Sheep’s milk and goat’s milk products are much easier to digest than those produced from cow’s milk. Fermented foods, such as nutritional yeast and tempeh, are also rich in digestive enzymes. I also recommend taking digestive enzymes and probiotic supplements every day. I don’t believe in taking too many supplements, but I think digestive enzymes and probiotics are a must. Digestive enzyme supplements are capsules or powders that contain the same digestive enzymes that our bodies produce. The best ones are derived from plant sources, not animal ones, because plant-based enzymes work within a wider pH range. You can take the capsules with meals, and you should try to take them at least once a day. A good thing to do is to make a habit of having them with your breakfast every day (we’ll talk about how to make all of these suggestions habits at the end of book). You can also open the capsules and sprinkle them directly onto your food. This will give the enzymes a chance to predigest the food before you have eaten it. Probiotics are capsules and powders that are a combination of beneficial bacteria and digestive microbes. Probiotics can also turn off FAT Programs by decreasing the amount of pro- inflammatory cytokines. 6 Try to find a probiotic that has a large assortment of bacteria and digestive microbes too.
