Part III: Physical Stresses that Activate the FAT Programs

may have less calories. This is an illusion. If you eat foods that have no nutritional value, all you are doing is replenishing your sugar and fat stores, and you’ll remain unsatisfied because you haven’t nourished your body. Calories aren’t everything. The net result is you’ll end up being hungry again a short time later. The more nutritious the food, the more you’ll be sat- isfying your body. You’ll be less hungry, and in the end, you’ll consume fewer calories. What We’re Really Starving For Even though we may have all the food in the world at our dis- posal today and we can be eating to our heart’s content, we can still, nonetheless, be starving. There are two fundamental reasons why we need to eat: (1) calories and (2) nutrients. A calorie literally means how much energy an item of food will provide your body, while a nutrient is a vitamin, mineral, fat, carbohydrate, or other essential building block that supports cellular health, integrity, or normal function- ing. Most of the food we eat today has calories but very few nutrients; as a result, even though we may be eating more than enough calories, we are starving nutritionally. Food isn’t what it used to be. The so-called “food” we are eat- ing today is drastically different from the food our ancestors ate. The foods our ancestors ate were mostly live, unprocessed foods like fruit, nuts, seeds, leafy greens, and freshly caught meat and fish. These types of foods have a full range of all the essential nutrients in a form that our bodies can digest and assimilate. Much of the food we eat today is fattening, not because it contains too many calories but because the nutrients it contains are inadequate and unable to be assimilated. This is more specifically what I mean when I use the term “fake” foods. The nutrients in many modern foods are either scant, of poor quality, or in such an unnatural state that our bodies don’t know what to do with them. Comparing what our bodies are yearning for to what we’re feeding them is like mining for diamonds. Your body has to sort
