Savitri - Book Four - Canto 2

But could not match the measure of her soul.

Mais ne pouvaient égaler sa mesure d’âme.

A friend and yet too great wholly to know, She walked in their front towards a greater light, Their leader and queen over their hearts and souls, One close to their bosoms, yet divine and far. Admiring and amazed they saw her stride Attempting with a godlike rush and leap Heights for their human stature too remote Or with a slow great many-sided toil Pushing towards aims they hardly could conceive; Yet forced to be the satellites of her sun They moved unable to forego her light, Desiring they clutched at her with outstretched hands Or followed stumbling in the paths she made. Or longing with their self of life and flesh They clung to her for heart's nourishment and support: The rest they could not see in visible light; Vaguely they bore her inner mightiness. Or bound by the senses and the longing heart, Adoring with a turbid human love, They could not grasp the mighty spirit she was Or change by closeness to be even as she. Some felt her with their souls and thrilled with her, A greatness felt near yet beyond mind's grasp; To see her was a summons to adore, To be near her drew a high communion's force. So men worship a god too great to know, Too high, too vast to wear a limiting shape; They feel a Presence and obey a might, Adore a love whose rapture invades their breasts;

Une amie, trop grande pourtant pour être connue, Elle marchait devant eux vers un plus grand jour, Leur guide et la reine de leurs cœurs et de leurs âmes, Proche et intime, pourtant divine et distante. L’admirant, stupéfaits ils la voyaient s’avancer Pour gravir d’un élan et d’un bond sublime Des hauteurs trop éloignées de leur propre stature, Ou progresser, par un lent et multiple labeur, Vers des buts qu’ils pouvaient à peine concevoir ; Mais, forcés d’être satellites de son soleil, Ils ne pouvaient se passer de sa lumière Et s’accrochaient à elle de leurs mains tendues Ou suivaient, trébuchant, les chemins qu’elle frayait. Ou bien ils s’attachaient avec leur vie et leur chair Pour la nourriture et le soutien de leur cœur : Le reste ils ne pouvaient voir au jour de la terre ;

Confusément ils enduraient sa grandeur. Ou, liés par les sens et le besoin de leur vie, Ils l’adoraient d’un amour humain trouble,

Mais ne pouvaient comprendre l’esprit qu’elle était Ni, changés par sa présence, devenir ses semblables.

Certains, conscients de leurs âmes, vibraient avec elle, Une grandeur pourtant inaccessible au mental ; La voir invitait l’adoration, être près d’elle La force d’une sublime communion. Ainsi Les hommes vénèrent un dieu trop grand pour eux, Trop haut, trop vaste pour une forme définie ; Ils sentent une Présence et lui obéissent, Adorent un amour qui envahit leurs poitrines ;
