My experience of Satprem

And so we entered into a new phase of the history of Auroville and a discovery, as it were, of its potential dimension in the destiny of the whole country. For the Central Government was then preparing to take an action which was entirely unprecedented in the history of human societies: to give its formal and legal support to a collective adventure which aspired , by its own nature and stated intent, to pass beyond all existing human laws and to establish upon earth the embryo of a new species. The Government of the largest democracy in the world was about to engage its powers in the protection of a collective experience the declared aim of which was to serve the divine consciousness upon earth, beyond all customs and traditions and cultures, beyond all religions, castes and races, a unique gathering of individuals from all nations for the creation of a universal city at the service of Truth – on the soil of India…! Thus this was a time when, in Satprem’s experience, the Auroville cause and that of the Agenda must be served side by side and simultaneously – and it did seem indeed that their respective oppositions were equally virulent. The SAS people, joined by other individuals who had been either disillusioned or hurt by the dominant group – dominant by virtue of its restless enthusiasm and flaming, brutal and often thoughtless condemns -, decided then to file a major case against the Central Government, claiming that the Auroville project was an enterprise of religious character in which, as in any religious practice, the Government had no constitutional right to intervene. That anyone might so betray the teachings of Sri Aurobindo and Mother, betray the very truth of the Way which They had opened, this more than any other argument, finally convinced those who were still hesitant of the necessity to welcome the Government and to accept its help.
