43) YERCAUD (Alt) 1,463 m/4,798 ft. Best time : April-June: A small hill resort rich in its scenic beauty. There are numerous view points from where a magnificent view of the plains and places around can be obtained. Access : Air - Coimbatore; Rail - nearest rail-head is Salem; Road - Salem, Bangalore & Madras. 44) KODAIKANAL : A charming hill station situated 120 km from Madurai. Among the most picturesque hill stations and its environments are endowed with all the rare beauties of nature. Known as Botanist Paradise. Places of interest : Kodaikanal lake, Bear Shola Falls, Coaker's Walk, Berijam lake, Blackburne Shola, Fairy Falls, Fischer's Seat, Goschen Road, Pillar Rocks, Rat Tail Falls, Silver Cascade Access : Air - Madurai; Rail - nearest rail-head Kodaikanal; Road - connected by all weather metalled road with important towns. KERALA 45) MUNNAR (Alt) 1,524 m/4,998 ft. Best time : Oct.-June: It means three rivers in .Malayalam. It combines the amenities of a modern holiday resort with the splendid scenery that is quiet, green, restful and inviting. The Pallivassal Hydro-electric project is located here. Access : Road - Emakulam (Cochin). Best time : Oct.-June. : It has an artificial lake (which has many delightful crecks, waterways, promontories and islands, thus rendering it possible to get good views of wooded hills and valleys, with grassy areas where glimpses of wildlife can be had). The ani- mals seen here are - Wild elephants, Gaur (Indian Bison), Sambar, barking deer, Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Beer and Cherro- tain (rare). Water-birds are fairly well represented here, and other birds include hornbills (two species). The whole area of the sanctuary abounds in lovely natural scenery in one of the most beautiful parts of India. The sanctuary is unique in India. Access : Air - nearest airports are Cochin and Madurai; Road - good network of roads connecting the sanctuary with the rest of India. 46) PERIYAR (Sanctuary) (Alt) 1,006 m/3,299 ft.

Places of interest : Doddabeta, Ooty lake, Tiger Hill, Valley view, St. Stephen’s church, Cairn Hill, Elk Hill, Snowdown Peak, Kalhatti Falls and the Palaces. Access : Air - Coimbatore; Rail - Mettupalayam is the nearest rail-head on metre gauge railway line; Road : connected with Coimbatore, Mysore and Calicut by all weather metalled road. Best time : April-June & Sept-Oct. : It is a lovely site on the mountain rail-route to Ooty. Second largest of the three hill stations of the “Nilgiris’ and stands on the lower ridge of the main plateau. Places of interest : Sim's park, Dolphin's Nose, Lambs Rock, and Lady Canning's seat, Loz Falls. Access : Air - Coimbatore; Rail - from Coimbatore; Road - Coimbatore and Madras.

42) COONOOR (Alt) 1,859 m/6,097 ft.
