Diagnostic tests are being developed for early detection of pregnancy, filariasis, hepati- tis - B, amoebiasis, toxoplasmosis, tuberculosis, leprosy, typhoid fever, malaria, giardiasis, leishmaniais, rotavirus and shigelosis. The research and development projects in the area of crop biotechnology have concentrated on rice, rapemustard, chikpea and wheat. Some of the ongoing projects are on the use of RFLP, mo- lecular mapping of rice, mitochondrial DNA, development of dis- ease-resistant varieties, production of somatic hybrids through protoplast and molecular confirmation in brassica. The Department has ongoing programmes of bilateral co-op- eration in biotechnology with Germany, USA, Russia, Switzerland, Sweden and UK. The Department has been entrusted with the set- ting up of gene bank of plants of special medicinal and aromatic value as a collaborative venture among the G-15 countries. CONSULTANCY ENGINEERING A notable fact of Indian industrial capability has been the emergence of the consultancy and design engineering organisa- tions. Hindustan Steel set up MECON in 1959. In 1960 came into being the Planning and Development divisions of the Fertiliser Corporation of India. There are now 150 consultancy firms in India employing more than 20,000 engineers and technologists. These firms have made a mark in planning, designing and installation of sophisticated industrial complexes not only in the country but outside. 2.
