Short duration extension programmes for practising managers, tailor-made programmes for Government officers and others and in company training programmes are also arranged. The Institute's Faculty is involved actively in research spon- sored by the Centre for Management and Development Studies. Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow The Indian Institute of Management, Lucknow, was started in the academic year 1984-85. The Institute's main activities at present include Post-Graduate Programme (PGP), Executive Development Programme, Research, Consultancy, Seminars/Conferences/Workshops and Publications. Having stabilised its two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Manage- ment, the Institute embarked upon a plan of expansion, growth and diversification of its education, training development and research activities in 1988-89. The intake capacity of the Post-Graduate Programme was raised to about 100 students in 1989-91 as against an average of 30 up to. 1988-90. The plans for initiation and diversification of research and training activities have been in consonance with the basic philosophy of the Institute, one of concern for and commitment to the society. In this respect, six thrust areas were selected under the National Policy on Education (NPE) framework. Executive Development Programmes (EDP) of one to four week duration have since been scaled up significantly. These Programmes inter alia cover management concepts & decision- making techniques, refresher courses on agriculture & rural develop- ment and administration of anti-poverty programmes. Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore-560 076 The Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, was estab- lished by the Government of India in co-operation with the Government of Karnataka in 1973. The Institute aims at augmenting the management resources of the country through programmes of teaching research, consultancy and other professional services. The Institute strives to enhance its contribution towards strengthening the managerial competence in business and industry and is continuing efforts to improve the effectiveness of public sector organisations and public systems, and under-managed sectors of the economy such as agriculture and rural development, education, energy, health and population, human set- tlement, environment and transport. The Institute's two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Manage- ment (equivalent to MBA) is one of the important management educational programmes in the country. The Fellow Programme in Management of the Institute is recognised as equivalent to Ph.D. by the Association of Indian Universities. This programme provides for development of concepts and skills for advanced research in the management fields and prepares graduates to take positions in teaching and training insti- tutions as well as in corporate bodies. The Institute offers every year a comprehensive package of Management Development Programmes (MDPs) for practising managers. These programmes span various functional areas of management as well as general management. While some are tech- nique-oriented, others emphasise problem-solving and decision- making skills. The Institute proposes to extend its commitment by offering MDPs in public systems and infrastructural industries such as education, health, transportation, energy and rural development.

The Institute offers a four-year course leading to B.Tech in aeronautical, chemical and civil engineering, computer science. It offers MSc course in chemistry, mathematics, physics and statistics. The Institute offers an MTech in different branches of engineering. Candidates must have a BTech with high second class. Candidates must have completed the graduate aptitude test in Engg (GATE) conducted at the five IITs for eligibility to the post-graduate course. The Institute awards PhD in engineering, science and the humanities and social sciences. Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad-380 015 The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, set up by the Government of India in collaboration with the Government of Gujarat and Indian industry as an autonomous institution in 1962, provides education, training, consulting and research facilities in management. The overall objective of IIM Ahmedabad is to improve the quality of management in organisations and to develop management knowledge through research and applied work. IIM Ahmedabad is a school of management and not a school of business administration. It has been the objective of the Institute to study problems of management in various types of organisations. While it started with the industrial sector, the Institute extended its activities to various development sectors including agriculture, co-operatives, rural development, health and population, education, government and other public systems. The overall objective of the institute will continue to remain focussed in future on "developing managerial knowledge and improving management practices of organisation in different sectors of the country". The Institute intends to consolidate further its work in other sectors of importance to the development of the country. The Institute conducts the following major programmes: 1) Two-year Post-Graduate Programme in Management for graduates from all disciplines which aims to develop professional managers. 2) Fellow Programme in Management (equivalent to Ph.D.) for those wishing to pursue careers in teaching and research. 3) Management Development Programmes (MDPs) which cover both general management and functional areas. These MDPs are for industry, business, agricultural and rural sectors and public systems covering education, health and population. Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta 700 027. The Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta was established in 1961 and has remained an autonomous institute. The Institute provides specialisation courses in Management (Finance & Control). Behavioural Sciences, Personnel & Industrial Relations; Marketing; Management Information Systems ; Opera- tions Management; Economics; Mathematics of Management Sys- tems; Operations Research & Systems Analysis; Regional Develop- ment; Sociology and Statistics. The Institute provides Post-Graduate Programme (equivalent to MBA) with a course duration of two-years. The Fellow Programme in Management of the institute is considered equivalent to Ph. D. by the Association of Indian Universities. The Institute offers a two-year Post-graduate Cert Programme (part time) in General Management for inservice graduates holding executive positions.
