ARCHITECTURE

Similar calculations can be made in respect of Expenses, effect of Tithi, effect of Days, effect of Lagna, effect of Caste, effect of Amsa, effect of Aspects, effect of Ganas, effect of Periods, effect of Boothas. If the majority of the effects are good there is no problem. If not, the width and length of the building can be adjusted, so that the area in square yards, is a full number. For example if the length of the building is 40 feet and width 30 feet, the area is 40 / 3 x 30 / 3 = 133 V 3 sq yards. By altering the length to 39 feet the area will be 39 / 3 x 30 / 3 = 130 sq yards which is a round number. In the wars between the Devas and Asuras a Demon appeared and began torturing the Devas. Ultimately the Devas got the better of the Demon and held him down. The Demon appealed to Brahma to rescue him. Lord Brahma named him Vaastu Purusha and said, "All works on earth will commence and conclude only after propitiating you". Vaastu Purusha sleeps for four months - Jyaishtha, Bhadrapada, Margashirsa and Phalguna in a year - which are inauspicious for commencing work on a building. Vaastu Purusha will be awake for the remaining eight months. After the completion of the house Griha Pravesha can be performed after the performance of Vaastu Shanti. Vaastu Shanti comprises the performance of relig- ious ceremonies. Before the commencement of each ceremony the owner of the house and his wife sit facing east or north and repeat, "This is an auspicious day" three times before the commenement of most of the religious ceremonies. Dig Bhandana is done by encircling the building with thread. Eight nails are fixed in different directions. The couple has to go round the building from the eastern side withone end of the thread tied to the nail. As the husband goes round the building unrolling the thread his wife follows him sprinkling milk on the thread. Eight pieces of white pumpkin and pieces of lemon are thrown outside the house in eight directions. This is known as Digh Bali. After the completion of the ceremonies the couple then take their seats. Kalasa water is sprinkled on the couple and other members of the family. The couple receive blessings from elders and well wishers. The function concludes with Aarati to the couple. Griha Pravesha is performed on the next day. At the main gate inside the compound the couple perform pooja for a cow and calf. A plate of raw rice, ghee and fruits are offered to the cow. This is followed by Kumkuma Aarati both for the cow and couple. The cow and calf are then led inside the compound followed by the couple. A brass measure filled with raw rice and a piece of jaggery is kept on the door frame on the right. The door is gently pushed causing the rice to spill on the ground inside the house. The couple enter the house putting their right foot first. The mason, carpenter, plumber, electrician, painter, engineer and others should be honoured with Vastra Dhana. All these engaged in the construction of the house should be fed and their good wishes obtained. — "Manasara" (C.H.G.R.)

The site should be levelled. A peg should be driven into the ground on the south-west comer. Another has to be fixed in the south-east corner. A third peg should be in the north- west. A fourth peg should be in the north-east. The excavation for the building should begin north-east to south-east (first phase) and proceed north-east to north- west (second phase), south-east to south-west (third phase) and north-west to south-west (fourth phase). Laying of foundation and basement should be in the fol- lowing sequence: south-west to south-east (first phase), south-west to north-west (second phase), south-east to north-east (third phase) and north-west to north-east (fourth phase). i

The length and width of the building should be measured and the area calculated in square yards. By dividing and multiplying this with different numbers various indi- cations can be obtained as regards the destiny of the building, prosperity for the owner etc.
