The Indian nationalist movement asserted the creation of a Constitu- ent Assembly elected by the people of India and ‘without foreign inter- ference’. The Constituent Assem- bly held its first session in Dec. 1946. The work of constitution making received more stimulus after independence. The final draft of the Constitution was presented to the Constituent Assembly by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar on 26thNov, 1949. The draft was moved by the Presi- dent to the Constituent Assembly Dr. Rajendra Prasad and was ap- proved.

Hail to the people of India and the Republic, Which they have constituted! The Himalayas are the crown of Bharat. The Ganga is her necklace. The Vindhyas are her waist And at her feet lies the ocean. She is resplendent with her green fields, rivers and countless streams. Millions of hands are at work and millions of feet are on the march. She gave to the world its first civilization. She sings her glory through the Hymns of Sama Veda. She is the creator of new Humanity. Truth and Non-violence are her gifts. Hail to the Paragon of Peace!

The constitution so adopted embodied the aspirations of the Indian people and the ideals they cherished during the struggle. The constitution besides other things was designed to be an instrument of contry's socio-eco- nomic transformation.

RAJENDRA PRASAD India's First President unanimous election by C.A.,

The constitution came in force on 26th Jan, 1950. The same day India became a SOVEREIGN DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC. Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as the First President of India amdist enthusiasm and rejoicings.
