Vaso-da-gama of Portugal discovered new sea-route to India in 1498, after the fall of Constantinople (in 1453). The Portuguese colonised Calicut in 1498, Goa in 1510, Diu and Daman, Agra, Hoogli, Surat Bassien, Salsette, Anjidivi and Macyalox. Portuguese colonialism ended in 1961, (after the liberation of Goa, Diu and Daman).
The British East India Company colonised Machalipatnam in 1611, Surat (1613), Agra Ahmedabad, Broach in 1619, Katak (1633), Madras in 1639, Hoogli (1651), Bombay (1688) Cambay, Karwar, Calicut, Anjengo, Patna, Dacca, Calcutta, Vishakapatnam, Nar- asapur, Masalipatnam, St. David, Portonovo and later conquered a large part of India, Burma and Ceylon. Their capital was Cal- cutta till 1911 and later it was shifted to Delhi. The British Colonialism ended in 1947. The Dutch estabished their colonies at Co- chin, Sadras (near Madras). They also colo- nised Trancobar near Pondicherry, Balasore, Calicut (1745-1770) Sirampore (c. 1750) near Calcutta. But they moved out India very soon. The French East India Company estab- lished colonies at Surat, Pondicherry, Portonovo, Machalipatnam, Balasore, Mahe, Calicut (between 1666 and 1690). Pondicherry was their Capital in India. French colonialism ended in 1954 (Pondicherry, Mahe, Varanasi and Kari- kal).
